Black crappie are a prized, great-eating panfish, but they come with a warning. They are the trickiest common species to keep in balance, and best left to larger ponds and hands-on owners.

Crappie can spawn heavily and, in the wrong conditions, quickly overpopulate and stunt, leaving you with a pond full of tiny fish and nothing else. Oftentimes, the solution is to cut the dam and start over.

A crappie pond needs active management: monitoring the population and being willing to harvest and adjust. If you are new to pond management, we don't recommend stocking black crappie.

Beyond the warnings, however, black crappie are an extremely rewarding fish if you can keep them in balance. Millions of people will say that there isn't a tastier freshwater fish than a black crappie. A balanced population will produce an abundance of quality meat fish for many years.
